Footplate Exprience courses at the ALR

Book now for you your introduction to the operation of a 7 1/4-inch gauge locomotive from the initial preparation through to driving and disposal at the end of the session. Choose from either stream or petrol/battery-powered locos.

Steam...
Your day starts at 10am with introductions, tea, coffee, and biscuits, followed by a track walk to introduce you to the railway layout, routes and signalling.
You will help to prepare your steam loco for the day, to raise steam for your driving experience. You will be shown how to control the loco, and once we are happy you understand the principles, you will have your first drive to get used to railway’s routes.
You will continue to drive the loco round the railway with coaches attached, and in the early afternoon members of your close family may come along and ride round the railway with you driving!
You will then help with the disposal and cleaning of the loco with the day finishing at 3.30-4pm. A certificate of attendance will be issued on completion.

Battery or petrol powered loco...
Your day starts at 10am with introductions, tea, coffee, and biscuits, followed by a track walk to introduce you to the railway layout, routes and signalling. Then you will be shown how to drive one of our battery/electric locos. Once you are used to the routes and signalling, you will drive the loco with coaches attached. You may then also be shown how to drive one of our petrol engine locos and will also drive this train with coaches attached, and in the early afternoon members of your close family may come along and ride round the railway with you driving!
You will then help with the cleaning of the loco with the day finishing at 3.30-4pm. A certificate of attendance will be issued on completion.
